Precision Care for Lasting Vision
Regular eye exams serve as a cornerstone of your preventive healthcare plan. Beyond simply updating a prescription, these visits allow our eye doctors to monitor your eye health and identify subtle changes that could indicate larger concerns.
A comprehensive evaluation at Mad River Eye Care includes an assessment of visual function, checking for eye misalignment or binocular vision issues that often go unnoticed. We take time to understand your daily vision needs and provide tailored advice to improve your visual comfort and clarity.

How Often Do I Need an Eye Exam?
Routine eye care is essential for patients of every age. Generally, we recommend that adults receive a comprehensive exam every 1 to 2 years to maintain clear vision and healthy eyes.
However, your optometrist may suggest a more frequent schedule following your initial visit. This recommendation considers factors such as your current visual acuity, existing eye conditions, contact lens wear, and any family history of eye disease.
Children have their own recommended eye exam frequency.
What to Expect During Your Eye Exam
Your experience begins with a seamless check-in at our reception, followed by specialized pre-testing conducted by our optometric technicians.
Using our suite of diagnostic technology, we gather preliminary data before you meet with your optometrist. This includes Optomap digital imaging to capture a high-resolution image of the inside of your eye, as well as assessing your refractive error (near- or farsightedness) using an autorefractor.
During the clinical portion of your exam, you’ll meet with your optometrist, who will determine your precise prescription, evaluate how your eyes work together, and perform a thorough assessment of your internal and external eye health to provide a complete picture of your well-being.
Our comprehensive eye exams are $319, which includes Optos retinal imaging, a comprehensive evaluation of your eyes and health by your optometrist, and assessing your refraction to determine your glasses prescription.
Our Technology for Eye Health Screenings
Our investment in innovative diagnostic tools allows us to provide a detailed analysis of your internal and external eye structures. We also use technology to assess for subtle vision problems, such as eye misalignment, which can cause significant symptoms while otherwise going unnoticed.
We use this technology to obtain accurate data regarding your vision and eyes, though the specific tests used in your exam are selected based on your individual needs and risk factors.
The Optomap provides an ultra-widefield digital image of up to 80% of the retina (the inside lining of the eye) without dilation in many cases. This technology allows us to screen for early signs of glaucoma and macular degeneration, as well as systemic issues like hypertension or diabetes that manifest in the eye.
Many of these conditions do not cause noticeable symptoms during their early stages. Regular monitoring through your comprehensive eye exams is the most reliable way to catch these problems.
The Neurolens N3 virtual reality headset measures subtle eye misalignments that can lead to chronic headaches, neck tension, and eye strain. By identifying these binocular vision discrepancies, we can prescribe specialized contoured prism lenses called Neurolenses to help provide relief from these symptoms.
Conditions We Monitor For During Your Eye Exam
While we screen for significant eye health concerns such as glaucoma, cataracts, and age-related macular degeneration (AMD), we also focus on conditions that impact your daily comfort and performance.
This includes conditions such as chronic dry eye, an uncomfortable and often inflammatory condition affecting tear production; digital eye strain, an unfortunately common side effect of our digital world; and binocular vision dysfunction, which affects the eyes’ ability to work together smoothly.
Learn more about the different conditions we screen for.
Dry eye occurs when the eyes do not produce quality tears or enough volume to maintain lubrication. This can lead to a persistent gritty sensation, redness, and intermittent blurred vision.
We assess your tear film during your eye exam to screen for dry eye. If we notice any concerns or you’ve been experiencing symptoms, we’ll recommend a full dry eye assessment to diagnose the cause and determine the appropriate management strategy for lasting comfort.
Extended time spent on screens can lead to fatigue, dryness, and difficulty focusing. This condition is increasingly common in our modern environment, and we evaluate how your eyes respond to digital demands to suggest tailored solutions.
We provide dedicated eyewear and lens treatments to help reduce the demands of digital devices on your eyes.
Myopia (nearsightedness) and hyperopia (farsightedness) are common conditions that affect how light enters the eye. We provide precise measurements for both glasses and contact lenses to help you achieve crisp, effortless clarity at every distance.
Presbyopia is the age-related loss of near focus, or age-related farsightedness. It usually occurs around the age of 45. Individuals with presbyopia may benefit from multifocal lenses in either glasses or contact lenses to provide clear vision at all distances.
BVD occurs when the eyes have difficulty working together as a team, often causing dizziness, light sensitivity, headaches, motion sickness, neck and shoulder tension, or trouble with reading comprehension.
Our functional testing and Neurolens N3 identify these misalignments to help restore visual balance. We can fit a precise prism lens prescription in Neurolenses to correct this misalignment and restore daily comfort.
Also known as photophobia, light sensitivity can cause significant discomfort in bright environments or under fluorescent lighting. We evaluate the underlying causes of your sensitivity to recommend specialized lens coatings or tints that support your visual ease.
If you’re experiencing severe light sensitivity or light-triggered migrain attacks, you may benefit from Avulux therapeutic lenses. These lenses block blue, amber, and red light wavelengths, which can increase sensitivity and symptoms.
